How numbers are drawn in football squares
The number draw is the hinge of every squares pool. It is the moment a blank grid of names turns into winners-in-waiting, and it is the one part of the game where fairness actually matters.
The one rule that cannot bend
Numbers are drawn after every square is claimed. Always after, never before. The reason is simple: not all numbers are equal. Scores built from touchdowns and field goals mean digits like 0, 3, and 7 win constantly while 2, 5, and 9 almost never do (we ran the data in our best numbers guide). If the numbers were visible first, the first person in line would grab 7-0 and the last would get stuck with 5-2. Drawing after claims is what makes squares a perfectly fair game that requires zero football knowledge.
What actually gets drawn
Two sequences, one for each team. The digits 0 through 9 are shuffled and assigned across the ten columns for one team, then shuffled again and assigned down the ten rows for the other. Every square now owns a unique digit pair. From then on, only the last digit of each team's score matters: if the score is 17-14, the winning square is where the 7 column meets the 4 row.
When to draw
Draw when the board is full, before kickoff. Drawing at the party with everyone watching beats drawing alone at your kitchen table, for one reason: witnessed randomness is trusted randomness. If the board will not fill in time, hosts typically let players take extra squares, or leave unclaimed squares as house squares and announce ahead of time what happens if one wins.
Ways to run the draw
The poster board method: write 0 through 9 on slips and pull them from a hat twice, once per team. It works, as long as everyone trusts the hat, the puller, and the timing. The app method: Boxpick draws randomly and reveals the digits one at a time with a slot machine style animation, with sound to match. Every player watches the same reveal live on their own phone, or you AirPlay it to the TV and let the room react digit by digit. Nobody wonders whether the hat was shaken properly, because nobody's hands were ever in it.
After the draw
Once numbers are assigned, they are locked for the whole game. The same square can win multiple quarters if the score digits hold. All that is left is to watch the game light up the board: live scores come in automatically and the winning square glows at the end of each quarter, no math and no announcements required.
