Office football squares: a work pool everyone actually joins

Office squares is the rare work activity people volunteer for. It takes thirty seconds to join, nobody needs to know anything about football, and the accountant who picked squares at random has the same shot as the guy in fantasy leagues. Here is how to run one without it eating your week.

The setup that works in an office

1. One board, one link, one message. Post the board link in Slack, Teams, or email with three things: the game, the price per square (or "free, bragging rights"), and the claim deadline. People claim from their phone in the browser; no app, no account.
2. Cap squares per person. Two or three keeps the board spread across the office instead of one department owning it. Say the cap in the message.
3. Draw the numbers publicly. On a call, in the break room, wherever. The draw happens after every square is claimed, and it has to be seen to be trusted. Boxpick reveals the digits one at a time so it works as a two-minute event.
4. Let the game run itself. The winning square lights up on everyone's phone at the end of each quarter, with the payout amount. Monday morning, the winners are already on the board.

The no-money office version

Some offices have policies about pools with money, and some people just do not want to chase coworkers for five dollars. Leave the price blank. Then attach stakes that cost nothing: a traveling trophy that sits on the winner's desk, the good parking spot for a week, the boss buys the Q4 winner lunch. A company-funded gift card as the prize keeps the whole thing above board. The game is exactly as fun.

Big offices: multiple boards

A board is 100 squares. Sixty people at two squares each fills it neatly. Two hundred people means two or three boards on the same game. Run one per floor or department and let them compete, or offer a cheap board and a pricier board and let people choose.
